Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde

As part of the Darebin Music Feast, world music community orchestra "Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde" hold a composition competition. This year I was chosen as a finalist, along with Malini Chidzey, Joel Ritchie and Andre Lobanov. Each of the finalist's compositions was performed in front of a sellout crowd at the Northcote Town Hall, conducted by the inimitable Gemma Horbury.

I was fortunate enough to take out the Industry Prize and the Orkeztra Prize. Andre Lobanov took home the Audience Choice Prize. It was an incredible learning experience, and a real treat to hear one of my compositions performed by an orchestra, with a real community vibe.

Part of the Industry Prize includes recording time at Incubator Studios. I'm quietly putting together a quartet of musicians I've met only recently who really blew my mind - drummer Danny McKenna and pedal steel guitarist Garrett Costigan, as well as my old friend and bassist Josh Bridges. We'll record several tunes I've composed over the last few years that don't really seem to fit in to any of my current projects. Stay tuned.

And big thanks to all involved with the Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde!

Three Irishmen walk into a studio...

Over the past two years, I've been involved in session work for three Irish musicians, all with contrasting and distinct styles of music. It has been a real pleasure to record and gig with Roesy, Aine Tyrrell, and Gallie. This year has seen the release of each of their albums, all produced by Mark Stanley of Red Room, and I'm proud to have been a part of them all. Well worth checking out.

New cleverhorse album

The second album from cleverhorse has been mixed (by Mark Stanley) and mastered (by Joe Talia). At the moment we're shopping around for distribution. The album should be out a bit later in the year. Sadly, this will be the last album with Luke Hodgson. Stepping into his shoes will be Zoe Frater. So, in the meantime, here's a sneak peek of a track that features "Dodgy" Hodgson.

Antelodic album

Antelodic began as an idea when my second daughter was born. She's now almost two and a half, and the album still hasn't been completed. But we are recording again in a few weeks and hopefully that will see the completion of recording. Ideally, this album will be released towards the end of the year. Here's our arrangement of Krystle Warren's "Sparkle and fade".

Roesy Irish Tour

I'll be doing a short tour of Ireland in May with Roesy to support the release of his new record "Wolf Counsel", which we debuted at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Band members include the album's producer Mark Stanley, singer Ju Buxton and Damien Rice's bassist Shane Fitzsimons. An Australian tour is scheduled for mid-year. The album is out now. Check out http://www.roesy.net/ for more information.

Liz Frencham

I've been doing an increasing number of duo gigs with Trentham's own Liz Frencham over the last year or so. We've developed a very sympathetic musical connection, and are undertaking some writing together. Liz is planning on doing not one, but two, albums over the next year. Stylistically, one will be folk based and acoustic, and the other more electric and jazz influenced. You can find out more about Liz at http://lizfrencham.com/.
